In this episode of Mission Matters, Dereck Moore speaks about how his business, Building Maintenance of Tomorrow, is providing opportunities in the building maintenance and janitorial industry while ensuring safe, clean workspaces for its clients.
What mission matters to you?
Moore says he aims to make a difference in his industry, his community, and the world. An entrepreneur by nature, he explains that he has big dreams and goals and is trying to find like-minded individuals whose vision and work ethic align with his.
How did your entrepreneurship journey begin?
“I always wanted to be my own boss,” Moore says, and recalls taking on odd jobs like cutting grass in his grandmother’s neighborhood at the tender age of 10.
As an adult, Moore spent more than a decade in real estate, but the 2008 financial crisis turned things upside down. To pay his bills, he looked to his in-laws, who had been working in the building maintenance and janitorial industry for more than 30 years.
Growing his business was scary, he recalls: “I always had ambitions to build a 100 million dollar corporation, sell it, and do philanthropic work, but a new industry required me to learn everything from scratch.” He took leadership training and reached out to mentors and business advisors to help him through the hard times toward something better.
His goal now, he says, is to create a turnkey operation so that he can bring like-minded individuals into the fold and help him make an even greater impact with his work.

What advice would you give your past self during the rough times?
“I’d tell my younger self to be open to learning more from others,” Moore says. More mentorship from a broader network of seasoned professionals could have helped him through the bumps and bruises more efficiently, he says. But although the journey wasn’t easy, his entrepreneurial spirit always pushed him to keep a leadership mindset, propelling him to improve the company’s systems and make life easier in the end.
Tell us more about Building Maintenance of Tomorrow.
Building Maintenance of Tomorrow is a commercial building maintenance company, offering building maintenance and janitorial custodial services to commercial clients. As a one-stop-shop for their clients, it provides a broad range of services in-house and offers referrals to specialty vendors as needed.
Moore believes his set of core values makes the company unique: the first, he says, is being led by faith, which spiritually guides him through his purpose and mission. His second core value is focusing on making a difference by hiring people who think beyond themselves. The third is making enough money to earn a living and carry the mission forward; all of this, he notes, is accomplished in part by simply staying positive.
The company is steadily building relationships with large corporations and focusing on hiring the right people. “My goal is to hire a team of at least 1,000 people, and see us grow regionally and nationally,” he says, noting that he’s developing a program to give veterans more opportunities in the workforce.
Moore’s upcoming show on the Mission Matters Podcast network
