Hey, I’d like to welcome you to another episode of Mission Matters. My name is Adam Torres, and if you’d like to apply to be a guest on the show, just head on over to missionmatters. com and click on Be Our Guest to Apply. Alright, so today I have Ed Martell on the line, and he’s going to be participating in the Megamix Expo that I’ve been talking about now for, I feel like, at least a month.
And Ed is the owner of the The Camp Transformation Center that’s located in Monrovia, California. Ed, first off, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me. Excited to be here. Alright, so I definitely want to get more into the Camp Transformation Center and the work that you’re doing. And also, what sets your gym apart from maybe some of the regular big box gyms.
But before we get into that Megamix Expo, is this the first time you’ve gone to the event or have you been before? This will be my first time participating in the event and attending. So it’s very excited about it. Yeah, me too. I’m kind of pumped, man. they get you? By the way, I don’t think I mentioned this in the opening, the event for everybody that’s anybody that’s new to listening to this series we’ve been covering the expo now, as I mentioned , for a bit, and the event’s going to be March 12th and 13th.
That’s Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Megamixexpo. com. Everyone can grab some tickets there, but circling back to my question, Ed are you excited, man? how’d you get involved with the expo? This is my first year as well, by the way. Yeah, I had gotten introduced to Tony from one of our members and one of my sales team reps and another individual.
So they connected us with Tony. Tony gave us. The rundown of what the event is and the types of people that come out there and it’s got me so excited. It was a no brainer. Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. Yeah, it’s a big event. I went out to the space. I don’t know if you had a chance to go see the space.
Have you or have you been to Santa Anita Park in general? I don’t know if you’ve seen the space yet. No, I have not I’ve been to the mall, but not, to the man is massive and the racetrack. I’ve been a couple of times. It’s massive. And I’ve seen the layout and where all the boots are gonna be also saw in the background.
Like, you see the mountains, everything else. I’m like, it’s next level. I’m so proud of what they’re doing. Yeah, 228 exhibitors so far. So , it’s huge. So I’m excited. Insane. And for the community to be able to come together like that and to do business with each other and network like it really is next level to do it on that scale.
So, of businesses and the community, let’s spend some of the time we have here on what you’re up to. So, the Camp Transformation Center. So, and that’s located in Monrovia. First off, tell us a little bit more about the gym. Yeah, we’re a franchise. We’ve been around since 2010. That was the year that the camp was founded.
Over a hundred locations. We’re part of an amazing brand, an amazing culture of members and campers and franchisers that Are on a mission to help people transform their bodies and , their minds and their social networks, right? It’s all about community health and mental, right? All those things combined that we offer and that we, we help transform.
Right? So, for us, it’s just, it’s about helping. Individuals one at a time and, and create those connections in those communities. How’d you get involved in this business? Like, where’d that start for you I mean, a franchisee, like what got you into the game? Well, so I joined in 2018. I was a member I weighed about 280 pounds, a little over 280, and I was looking to make a change in my life.
I was tired of, being overweight or grossly overweight, I was unhappy. My mental wasn’t as good because I was also dealing with health issues that were chronic and ongoing. And so I decided to make a change, change my, eating, change my breakfast. That started a little bit more activity. Then when I was starting to look for a gym in a community, I was immediately drawn to the camp by my wife and from that point on, it was history.
I became a member, did a challenge, a couple of them, lost some weight, got down to about 228 pounds and grew a passion of just wanting to help people do it. So I became a trainer, got certified, and then once a spot opened up to become a Partner and to become a franchisor franchisee, then I decided to jump on it and that was in 2021.
So 3 years of being related with the camp 3 years in, I was able to get an opportunity to become a franchisee. And so that’s where I kind of started and kind of how it progressed 3 years after that. We’re here. Man, that’s such a great story. I love these stories of entrepreneurs and business owners that go out there and, you know, especially when they had something or went through something and it was a benefit to them.
In this case, you obviously got results from going through this transformation and going through these camps and then you wanted to become a blessing and benefit to others and help them with their man. I love stories like that. Yeah. Yeah. So what makes this or what made this so much different for you versus maybe just the traditional gym?
Like, cause obviously you got some outstanding results. Like, how was this different for you personally? Let’s start there. you know, just like most people, you, try to kind of start your weight loss journey, right? You come up with, you’re like, Hey, I got to make a change. Yeah. And usually you. Do what you kind of learn, right?
Hey, I need to cut calories. I need to stop eating carbs, which is a kind of a myth. I need to cut back everything. I can’t have, I can’t enjoy life and you lose some weight and then you bounce back and you gain the weight back plus some traditionally. So I, I battled with that a lot, a lot of my life uh, but I didn’t have.
Anyone to really keep me accountable. I didn’t really have a sense of community. I can go to the gym and I’ll see the same employees and I’ll see some of the same people there, but it doesn’t really give you an opportunity to just build deeper relationships and connections. And so after years and, you know, at that point, decades of going to gyms and, like, trying to lose weight and not having really much success.
I decided that, hey, I needed to try something different, and my wife invited me to come out to a Saturday event, and I ended up making friends that first day, I ended up deciding to be part of the challenge, so now I was part of a community that was doing the same things that I was doing, and that was going through, through it in the trenches, right?
Like, hey, I’m, Hmm. I’m hungry. Oh, yeah, me too. Oh, man. Are you going to come in the next day? Yeah, me too. I’m going to be there. And once you have those forms and then those bonds, you don’t want to let them down. And then you start going from not wanting to let them down to starting to see results and picking it up.
And then all of a sudden you’re kind of in a groove. And that’s, that for me was just different. Right. I had friends. I had a community. I had people. My wife didn’t want to go work out. Well, I had my friends. If my friends didn’t want to go work out, I had my, my wife. My wife didn’t want to go work out. I started meeting new people.
And so that, was you know, for me being a person that was struggling on day one to starting to become someone that was helping people that were struggling on their first day, that, There were just a lot of things that kept me a part of the culture and part of that community and so that that was the strongest thing that I got and that was the strongest thing that I saw.
People gravitate towards and so I was like, well, why not be a part of that and be part of the camp and, be a facilitator of the culture. what attracted you that’s an amazing story. First off, and thank you for sharing because a lot of the things that you dropped in there, like the community, the accountability aspect, like all those things, those add up to notice.
You weren’t talking about, like, some. Draconian system that like, you know, punishes you for doing something wrong. I mean, everything that you talked about were benefits and positive reasons why somebody would want to get involved. And dare I say you made, you made fitness sound fun. Dare I say, I don’t know I’ll let the audience judge that one.
But what switching slightly here, what. attracted you to the business opportunity of it? Because obviously you had the results that you received yourself. You had the community, you had all of that. You leaned into it and it worked for you. What attracted you to the business side of things? I think I’m just a glutton for punishment, man.
Poor you. Me too. Me too. So, you know, obviously you, go into a business because you want to, you find something that you really love and then you want to find a way to make money with it. that’s kind of at the root and at the basis. But if you can make money and help people at the same time with their journeys and make a positive impact in society.
That’s really what gravitated me towards. This venture I get to put a business where if I put my hard work into it, hopefully it pays off, you know, businesses are up and down. You never know. Right? Yeah, you kind of go with the punches and you just got to survive and break through and build and grow and build and grow and deal with a bunch of different things.
And so if I didn’t have a passion for this man, I couldn’t go through the ups and downs of owning a business and a brick and mortar business like this. Um, But. Just when I’m down and out and feeling like I just what what’s going to happen next. I get members that tell me. Hey, I’ve done this for the 1st time.
Well, I never thought that I could do this or thank you for being here because I was going through this time of my life. And now I’m in a better place mentally. And those things is what gravitated me towards this style and this this type of business. At the same time, if you can. Or make a living while providing some type of benefit to society why not, right?
Why not? Yeah, or had you been an entrepreneur prior to this or is this one of your first ventures? Kind of my first venture. I did some training during the pandemic and things were closed down. So, you know, very small scale. Yeah. So, I’m, I’m in 3 years in, I’m still learning. I’m still getting around and learning and growing and developing and so, you know, that’s the beauty of it.
Yeah, but I would say, and I mean, correct me if I’m off, one of the big benefits of you going kind of the franchise model is that the support, right? To support the system, the programs, like a lot of the things that maybe some of the others, it’s still, even though it’s still work, any franchises work, that’s a given or any business.
but if you can, you know, learn from those that have gone before you and have other people invested in your success, I mean, that that’s the beauty. Oh, yeah. Yeah. You know, the. Okay. Franchise, the corporate franchise, they are very helpful. They have weekly meetings. They have support systems in place.
We have our own franchise business consultants that we have access to reaching out to if we have some struggles and some help we have additional trainings, we have franchise meetings through zoom. So there are a lot of resources that you talk about that really help us out. Get through some of those struggles that we we see kind of day to day and we have it’s great now you’re gonna have a booth over at the Megamix Expo, right?
that is correct. Fantastic. So first off, if somebody’s listening to this, and if they want to follow up and connect and learn more about the camps in general, , how do they follow up? I think the best way is to follow us on Instagram and drop us a message. We’re at the camp, T.
C. Monrovia and then our tick tock as well as growing. It is at the camp Monrovia. And so those are the two best ways. You can also look us up on Google and, and contact us, you know, via the traditional landline phone and stuff like that. But social media get a good sense of what we are, who we are, and all the types of individuals that we cater to, which is a huge range, huge spectrum.
