In this episode of The Optimized Mind, Dr. Kate talks with Lindsay Shoop, Olympic rower, coach, author, speaker, and lifelong athlete.
The discussion focuses on Lindsay’s book, Better Great Than Never: Believing It’s Possible Is Where Champions Begin in which she chronicles her rise as a top US Women’s Rower and the many lessons learned along the way. Some key themes discussed throughout include the ways in which her book serves as a blueprint for young athletes who want to maximize their potential on the water and off. Dr. Kate and Lindsay take a deep dive into the ways in which rowing is a “great equalizer,” which fosters self-discovery and confidence from the inside out. Additional topics explored include the power and importance of patience, the importance of connection and finding balance mentally and physically in sport and life.
Lindsay Shoop is a coach, author, speaker, and lifelong athlete. She is an Olympic Gold Medalist, a three-time World Champion, a five-time World Cup medalist, and has twice been inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame. She holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Positive Coaching Alliance Trainer.
As an athlete, Shoop began her rowing career as a walk-on at the University of Virginia during the spring semester of her third year. Following her time at the University, she went on to row with the US National Team for nearly seven years; after which, she subsequently and serendipitously fell into and fell in love with coaching.
As a coach, Lindsay leads camps, clinics, webinars, and workshops for coaches, athletes, and teams of all types. Over the years, she has worked with every level of athlete including middle and high school, college, masters, pre-elite, and elite.
Parallel to her coaching, Lindsay is a speaker and sports advocate who presents for major corporations, academic institutions, sports conferences, and national and international non-profit agencies.
Lindsay’s advocacy extends beyond speaking and into writing as she has published several articles on rowing and health and is the author of Better Great Than Never, which chronicles her life-changing journey from ultimate defeat to Olympic gold.
When she is not coaching or writing, Lindsay’s passion for storytelling shines through race commentary as she has covered events for NBC Olympics, ESPN, ACC Network, NCAA, and USRowing to name a few.
Through all she does, Lindsay uses her voice to inspire and to improve the lives of others through her passion for storytelling and the sport of rowing.
