Hey, I’d like to welcome you to another episode of Mission Matters. My name is Adam Torres, and if you’d like to apply to be a guest in the show, just head on over to missionmatters. com and click on be our guest to apply. All right, so today I have Scott Landis on the show. He is founder and CEO over at Business Freedom Forum and also author of the upcoming book as of when we record this, which is February, but it’s coming out later this month.
It’s called Balancing Act, How to Achieve. Peace of mind, financial freedom and lasting fulfillment in business and life. Scott, welcome to the show. Hey, Adam. Thank you so much. Great to be here. All right, Scott. So we’ve got a lot to talk about. Definitely want to get into your book a bit. Want to get into the work that you’re doing at business freedom forum.
But first I know you’re referred over to us for, by Tony and his team over at mega mix expo, which for the audience that have been listening to this. Series I’ve been putting together. Just remember Megamix Expo. It’s a Wednesday, March 12th, Thursday, March 13th. I’ll be doing some live podcast interviews out there.
And it’s going to be a lot of great people coming out. It’s megamixexpo. com so you can grab some tickets. So, Scott, I got to start it off with this. Have you been to one of these expos before, or is this your first time? This will be my first time. I’ve been working with the group with Tony since last summer just on some business stuff.
But yeah, this will be my first time officially at, at one of the Expos. Man, it’s my first time as well, and I’m excited. I’ve been doing this whole interview series, and there’s a lot of of veterans been to many of these , that are getting me all hyped up. I had a lady that I interviewed.
Oh my gosh. What was her name? Diana. And she says, this is like the Disneyland for business owners. I was like, hold on. That’s a testimony. So , talk about your involvement and what attracted you to the brand and cause you’re doing more, you have a booth and you have some other things going on.
What, attracted you to participate? Well, I mean,, I was connected through some of the leadership team at Megamix , and been able to help and serve on that level. But I love , when I came to it, I saw a vision. I saw the mission of Megamix that, there was all these kind of silos and pockets of business and different chambers of commerce and, their idea of bringing it all together.
Like, I’m a guy who likes to have community with other business owners and And really, I think there’s power in community, there’s power in connection and working together. And there’s so many forces in this world that seem to be against us. And so it’s like, okay, it’s easier, it takes a village, right?
It’s easier to work together and to support each other and share, pain, struggles, successes, and encouragement than to go it alone. And, I kind of hate the loneliness that can happen. So I I’m a big proponent of, of bringing them all together. So I loved how they do that, right?
They just bring all of these different business silos together into one place. And that’s what the Megamix expo is to me. And I I’m way behind that. Yeah, talk to me a little bit more speaking of businesses. Talk to me about Business Freedom Forum and your business. Yeah, so the Business Freedom Forum, so I’ve been running mastermind groups for small to medium sized businesses for over a decade and what it is is getting groups of, you know, anywhere from six to 12 different business owners leading a company kind of just to what I just spoke about.
Like, it can be lonely doing that. You’ve got employees, you’ve got, you know, a lot of times the people I work with are typically married with kids at home in that demographic and running a business and that can be hard because you’ve got all these different strains and stresses and challenges.
So bringing a group together of like minded, they’re, you know, typically different industries. Different walks of life backgrounds, but bring them together to talk about business and solve business issues in a mastermind session. A peer advisory board is there’s something I’m passionate about. I’ve seen it just do amazing things for business owners.
And so the business free inform is about that. And so basically. Our mantra is like healthy, stopping your own worst enemy. So typically as business owners, we’re, we’re going through , trying to do all the things. And, we look back sometimes, , the people that come to the group and really have.
Big advancements, , they’ve been in a place where they’ve been kind of stuck. Looking back over the last year or so, they’re like, I’ve been moving towards these challenges and these goals, I’m looking to overcome these obstacles, and I keep doing, finding myself doing the same thing. And not, and getting the same results and I’m trying to get different results.
And so, and basically it’s a catalyst to help them , do something different and get advice and experience from other business owners, like what is working for other people. And you learn, you get a little nugget, , you get a connection, you get, , a hand up. Sometimes there’s,
finance, sometimes there’s a connection, whatever it is, but to just kind of get, you know, get out of the stuck. And, , really that freedom , is a key word we’re looking to help you go from , wherever that stuck is to whatever it is. Busting through the ceiling. They seem to be bumping your head again and get you up to the next level.
And that’s what it is thank you for sharing that and i’m a big fan of books and authors and people that want to get their Work out there. What inspired ? This book so balancing acting congrats. I know it’s not easy to put a book together So congrats what inspired the book?
Well the original inspiration was just a business one, it’s about, getting, getting out there meeting people that I different communities that I haven’t met before. And so these days, you sort of have to have a book to be able to get in front of different audiences and just to be legit.
And, , The book has been in there in that, in my brain for a while and it just took a, it took a good reason to actually sit down and, and go through the, the sweat and sleepless nights of writing it to get it going. But it’s funny, Adam, when, when I sat down, so I had a very practical reason to start.
But then once I started writing and the book starts with, you know, just, I went back to where was my darkest, most challenging, most, depths of despair moment in business. And. It starts out very emotional, like, , there was a moment where I was, , at a boardroom table , in front of my peers and just like peers on that, on that table, like I lost it.
And that was years ago. We were part of the, the real estate crash, 08, 09. And, it was during that time, the stress was overwhelming and I had a business coach at the time say, Hey, you know, it’s okay to give up if you, if you need to give up. And that’s what like made me read it.
I was like, wait, that’s an option. Like I could stop. I, you know, just the hustle is just so there for the entrepreneur. But anyway, so once I started writing the book and I started like connecting to, Hey, there’s probably people. , I’ve come a long way since that moment, and there’s probably people that might read this book that maybe need the encouragement, to just keep going and to not give up.
And maybe if it helps somebody that’s, , in that challenging moment, and they, and they just need that one step forward. nugget to help them break through, if the book can do that. Like, that’s what really got me inspired as I started writing it. And, and then, you know, of course, you know, now I’m excited to, to this.
Let it out to the world and start, talking to people about it. That’s awesome. I know when we’re talking about a book in general, There’s a lot of takeaways a lot of things and and obviously want people to pick up a copy of the book and so that they Can get the full experience But if there was just one or two takeaways that you hope your readers walk away with after reading it What would those be?
Yeah, so the book is really targeted to , the individual, the entrepreneur, business owner who is, committed in a lot of ways. Right? So typically a married or in a committed relationship, maybe raising kids, going through all of that and. and been in business for a while and the business is at a stage where it’s starting to scale.
So there’s just like this perfect storm of all these commitments and all these challenges and they don’t necessarily pull together, right? , your family wants more of your time. And your business needs your time and that alone creates tension, right? And your family wants to go on vacation and, you know, have nice things.
The business, you have to spend time in that to create , that income to provide for that family. So it’s like, these things are just at odds. And, even though the book’s called Balancing Act, I mean work life balance, I’m on the team that says that’s sort of a myth.
There is really no balancing it, but we talk about integration and , how to do the best you can of, spinning all these plates and, and at the end of the day, it’s about fulfillment. It’s about finding peace because, how there’s going to be storms. There’s going to be challenges.
I don’t think there’s, if there is, you know, I haven’t experienced it, but I don’t think there’s a way to get through all of that without some challenge, some storms, some pain, some mistakes, and you let some people down that you really care about. You make some mistakes, you make a loss on the business side.
But how do you go through all of that? And come out with, with peace of mind and, and lasting fulfillment on the things that really matter. So there’s a couple of key things. We, we talk about our alignment operating system, which is just putting all of those things , into an alignment with your purpose and making sure that , when you have to, when the rotor meets the road and you have to make a tough call, making the, making the call that’s in alignment with the bigger picture. And then we’ve got our four pillars of fulfillment, which really help you kind of, it’s the guardrails that help you from, , going way off the rails.
You can stay within these boundaries. You can stay within these guiding principles. With these four pillars of fulfillment and kind of make it all work. It’s a mess, but at the end of the day, if you can create peace of mind and lasting fulfillment and financial freedom, I think that’s a win.
Yeah. Sounds like an amazing win to myself as well. Well, Scott, I’m going to be going to Megamix Expo and I’m looking forward to meeting you there. And I think you’re going to have some books there. Am I wrong on that? , I think you told me that. Yeah. Yeah, we’ll definitely have books there. I’ve got one of the workshops on the March 13th on the second day So I’m looking forward to having some of the VIP ticket people there and in my workshop and yeah, we’ll have books available for those who want to pick it up.
Some of the VIPs get included with their tickets. So that’s good news. But yeah, we’ll have some available for anybody who wants to pick it up on the spot. Fantastic. And for everybody listening, just so you know we’ll definitely include the links and everything like that to Megamix Expo in the show notes, but pretty easy to remember MegamixExpo.
com. So you can pick up those tickets. And now I’m learning you get the VIP ticket. You get Scott’s book. So buy a VIP ticket and Scott, if people want to follow up with you specifically even beforehand, maybe, and learn more about business freedom forum, how do they do that? Yeah. So we have business freedom forum.
