In this episode of The Pulse Experience Podcast, your host, Edward J. Beltran, is joined by Kari Loken, a Master Facilitator and Certified Pulse Coach. They dive deep into the challenges faced by Kari’s coachee, who has been dealing with a toxic new manager in her department for a year. This conversation highlights the importance of self-awareness and the value of providing feedback even when others may lack awareness. Together, they explore the emotional toll this situation has taken and the steps taken to address it.

Kari’s coachee is a Director of Operations at her organization, with 17 years of tenure, responsible for a team of nine direct reports and 72 people reporting to her overall. She recently acquired a new manager who has brought a more hierarchical and siloed management style, causing significant disruption to the team’s culture and dynamics. The coachee has been experiencing immense stress in anticipation of her weekly meetings with this manager, leading to physical and emotional exhaustion.

Edward highlights the immense stress and emotional toll the coachee is experiencing. Kari shares the coachee’s vivid description of her physical and emotional reactions before and after meetings with her manager. It becomes evident that she is suffering from anxiety, tension, exhaustion, isolation, and a sense of worthlessness due to the ongoing situation.
