Hey, I’d like to welcome you to another episode of Mission Matters. My name is Adam Torres, and if you’d like to apply to be a guest in the show, just head on over to mission matters.com and click on be our Guest to apply. All right, today’s guest is Alexander Simpson, and he’s. CEO over at Liquid LP. And just for everybody listening, so, you know this particular interview is part of our Milken Global conference coverage series, where we bring you the best of those that participate in the conference or as speakers, as as panelists, and attendees as well, and VIPs all lumped in there.
So first thing first, Alex, welcome to the show. Thank you. Thank you for having me. All right Alex. So we’re gonna talk about what you’re doing over at Liquid LP. Of course. I wanna get into your experience as well. But just to start us off, I mean, talk to me about the conference. Is this the first time you’ve been, have you been in the past?
Like, let’s start there. Well, it’s actually my first time. I think over the years experience compounds in terms of like lessons, how you adept and feel in the surroundings. It can be quite overwhelming in the beginning when I first went. I think over the years you kind of can build your own flow and cadence.
So yeah, like I think this year was like really good, especially after building my own cadence over the years and, and just understanding like what, going in with more intentionality and also creating a bit of serendipity. But it was great overall. You’re a pro. You’re a pro after that many years what keeps you coming back?
A lot of ways that people can spend their time. A lot of things you can do. What keeps you coming back year after year? I think creating more face value with people that you only get to see at those events. Especially people that are around the world. I think new insights on areas that aren’t really correlated to like my specific industry are pretty interesting.
So yeah, I think. More relationship building. I think creating different serendipity different areas of like the business fields and just learning. I think just kind of opening up to that learning is always great because every year there’s a new trend that’s covered whether it’s digital assets, whether it’s ai, and you’re getting different perspectives from truly diverse audience and range of professions and levels of experience.
So it’s very thought provoking. Yeah, I agree. And I’ve heard, I’ve heard people that I, especially in this series that have been going for a long time, I had Steven, me on here who, I think he said he’s been going for like, I don’t know, like 10, 15 years. He’s been there I think since, I don’t even know how long it’s been.
But he, he was trying to figure it out when the first time he went. But it seems to me as well, like year after year, there’s like this community that builds, and over time you get to see some of the same people. And like you were saying, like did you get that community feel now that you’ve been going long enough?
Certainly I’m part of the young leaders circle as well, so there’s like a more of a youngest like circle and then I think, yeah, I seeing some places you get more familiar and it just feels comfortable. So definitely I do feel that. That’s awesome. Well let, let’s switch it up a bit here.
Alex, I do wanna get into the work that you’re, and what you’re working on as well. So let’s get into your company. So liquid lp, tell us more. Wow. Essentially we enable investors in illiquid private funds to get alternative liquidity in the form of loans. Instead of them having to sell their positions in private funds like private credit, private equity, venture capital, they can in turn receive a loan where they can receive interim liquidity and not have to go through a wholesale capital gains, et cetera and keep the upside of the original intent of investing.
That’s essentially what we do. And yeah, we were predominantly across North America. Hmm. How, how did you get involved in this business? Like where’d that start for you? It just happened pretty naturally. Eventually coming from like a FinTech founder role before in different businesses and then going through the cycle of venture capital, going through also doing originations in our previous business of PIPO shares and then focusing on this asset cost.
It was pretty organic. Yeah, we find product markets that just pretty organically over time. Hmm. And so how do you make, like how do you match maybe your business if you do, by the way, match your business and what you do and then when you attend like high level conferences like Milken like, how do you kind of match those things based on the sector?
It’s always an interest to go to things relevant, like private credits private markets, private equity, always relevant just to get insight, meet the speakers, meet other key participants in panels and just to, you know, plant the seed, create the relationships, whether it’s relevant now in the future to see how you can help each other.
So yeah, I think that’s pretty interesting. And also to understand how, certain assets are viewed in different sectors and different asset classes in the private markets. Those are pretty prevalent for what we do. Mm. You mentioned the Young Leader Circle. I’m not, not too familiar with that talk.
Talk to me a little bit more. What does that entail? Young Leader Circle is a group of about 250 people that are referred, selected to join a group of under 40 that are from all around the world, different different backgrounds, different cultures. It’s a very diverse group and they bring people together.
They give them opportunities to engage with each other, to have engagement with certain speakers, one-on-one who are very prolific and that have also spoken in Milken. And there’s also like a sub-community culture where people help each other across personal professional elements as well. So yeah, it’s a great initiative and it’s essentially.
To kind of like build more leadership and kind of promote and give people they wouldn’t have the chance to attend these conferences. And being smaller circle, smaller rooms the opportunity to kind of engage and speak and meet new people that they wouldn’t have had the chance to otherwise. That’s amazing.
so we’re, you know, we’re, just for context for everybody listening, we’re recording this on July 10th, 2025. I’m curious on your end, Alex, what kind of things are you following? What trends are exciting you? Like, whether it’s a, it’s in business, technology, otherwise, what kind of trends are getting, are getting you going right nowadays?
I think it’s interesting to see what AI businesses are becoming more features as opposed to. Actual businesses, I think to see how the digital asset sector is getting more adopted in different sectors as well. Like forms of like cryptocurrency, the forms of stable coins, and just consolidation the market with like mergers.
Companies that we thought would go public over some time that are staying private or getting forced. So yeah, I think, yeah, I think the prolonging of private companies, I think as mentioned like. AI companies versus actual being features, and then just the adoption of digital section three that I find quite intriguing.
Yeah. Same here. And things are moving so fast it seems like, I mean, I guess things are always moving fast, but I feel like some of the, some of the, some of the changes, it’s week by week almost to me. And I, see this, and even on the show as we’re, as I’m interviewing people and seeing what’s technology-wise, what’s coming up next and what people are working on it, changes.
Pretty quickly, and I’m excited to see where we head next. Well, Alex that being said, it’s been great having you on the show today and to catch up and learn more about what you’re doing over at Liquid lp, but then also, you know, your, experience with the conference and I’m sure I’m gonna run into you probably in the hall next time, now that we know each other.
